What Is an MSP and What Do They Do?

You’ve probably seen the term “MSP” floating around if you’ve looked into IT support for your business. Stands for Managed Service Provider, and it’s basically a company that runs your IT for you on an ongoing basis, instead of just turning up when the printer’s jammed or the wifi’s down. Most work on a flat monthly fee. You’re not waiting for a surprise invoice every time something needs fixing.

What Do They Actually Do?

Day to day, an MSP is keeping an eye on your systems so problems get caught before they cause real downtime. There’s a helpdesk you can ring or email when something’s not working, or when someone on your team just needs a hand. They’ll handle the cybersecurity side too, firewalls, antivirus, that sort of thing, plus making sure your backups actually work if the worst happens (a lot of businesses only find out their backups were broken when they need them).

Cloud tools like Microsoft 365 fall under their remit as well, licensing, updates, security settings, all of it. And the better ones will sit down with you now and then to talk about where your IT needs to be heading, not just where it is today.

Doing it Yourself vs Bringing Someone In

If you’ve got the budget and the right person, in-house IT can work brilliantly, especially once a business gets to a certain size. The trouble is, one person rarely covers everything well. You end up strong on networking but weak on security, or great at fixing laptops but lost when it comes to cloud licensing.

An MSP gets round that by giving you a team rather than a person, usually for less than hiring one in-house specialist would cost you anyway.

It’s Not the Same as Having “an IT guy”

Plenty of small businesses get by on a local contractor who pops in when something breaks. Nothing wrong with that early on. But it’s reactive by nature, you only find out about a problem once it’s already a problem.

An MSP is meant to stop things breaking in the first place. Monitoring/patching and flagging anything that looks off before it turns into a Monday morning disaster.

How Do You Know You Need One?

A few signs worth paying attention to. IT keeps pulling you away from actually running the business. You’re not sure how protected you really are. Nobody could tell you with confidence whether your backups would actually restore. Your team’s growing and things are getting harder to keep track of. Or you’re just sick of unpredictable bills every time something goes wrong.

If any of that sounds familiar, it’s probably time to look into it

.

What’s Worth Asking Before You Sign a Contract

Not every MSP operates the same way, so it’s worth digging a bit before committing. Ask whether they’re actually monitoring things or just reacting when you call. Find out what’s really included in their security cover, not just the headline pitch. Ask if they’ve worked with businesses like yours before, and whether they’re a proper Microsoft partner who keeps up with the licensing changes (these shift more often than people realise). You want something that feels like a partner, not a call centre you’re stuck with.
