Upgrading to Windows 11: What is a Trusted Platform Module?

Windows 11, the newest addition to Microsoft’s line of operating systems includes many new and impressive features which haven’t been seen before in previous Windows versions. However, it is vital you consider your current hardware before jumping into an upgrade. One part in particular which needs careful consideration is the Trusted Platform Module. In this blog, we cover the topic of TPM Windows 11.

What is a TPM?

The word TPM is short for Trusted Platform Module. This is a small chip on the motherboard of a computer which provides an important security feature. Similar to putting in a code on your home alarm when entering, a TPM sends a key to your PC when you turn it on which unlocks the drive. If it suspects that the key has been stolen and the drives are trying to be accessed without the PC being tuned on, the computer will lock and not boot. This security feature is vital for the modern day where having extra cybersecurity measures in place is necessary.

Why Do I Need a TPM for Windows 11?

Trusted Platform Modules act as an efficient alternative to securing older Windows PC’s. Since Juy 2016, any laptops or computers made new running Windows 10 had to have a TPM chip as standard. Older PC’s may have TPM 1.2 rather than the newer TPM 2.0 however Microsoft don’t advise that this is used to run Windows 11 and an upgrade to a machine with 2.0 is recommended. For older PCs without a TPM, Windows 11 will not run on your machine.

How Do I Find Out if My PC Has A TPM?

If your PC or laptop is 2016 or newer, it is almost certain that you have the newer TPM 2.0 chip which is necessary to run Windows 11. Anything older than this may only have the 1.2 module or none at all. To check whether your PC has a Trusted Platform Module for Windows 11, check under the security processor details section in your PC or laptop settings. Alternatively, follow the Dell recommended steps linked here.
